I'm boring! 🥱

Hello Reader,

Last week, I taught a fun workshop about website migrations and I found myself saying multiple times something like, “Listen, we don’t want this to be exciting! There are very few occasions I want a thrill in business. Let’s keep this as boring as possible.”

Of course this is true in the very glamorous and exciting world of website migrations, but it’s also true in most areas of business.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t want my business finances or marketing to feel like a rollercoaster ride. A nice calm stroll in the park is more the vibe I’m aiming for.

Here are some examples of how that applies, FAQ style:

Q: "What's the best marketing you've done?"

A: "Boring answer: A weekly newsletter."

Q: "How did you build your authority?"

A: "Boring answer: Brick by brick. Consistency is the key."

Q: "How did you make your first sale?"

A: "Boring answer: By talking to local folks about what they needed."

My pricing? Boring. The numbers are round and based on a strategy I’ve used for years.

My sales pages? Boring. They explain the problem and solution so visitors can make an informed solution.

My content strategy? Boring. It’s based on data and real conversations I have with folks in my audience.

Even my business model? Boring. Consulting is just about the oldest, most unglamorous business out there.

I'm an "evergreen sales" kind of thinker, focusing on long-term, sustainable growth. There are not a lot of dopamine hits happening. It's like investing in a solid index fund: less exciting, but a more predictable and reliable path to success that putting money into crypto or whatever is trendy on Reddit these days. (Please don't tell me, I do not want to know.)

Instead of chasing fleeting marketing trends, I prioritize building authority through consistent, valuable content. This approach may not generate sudden "cash infusions," but it offers stability, predictability, and more space for creativity and giving back.

I share this all not to pay myself on the back, but to give you a glimpse of what a lot of people are quietly doing every single day. They're boring and they're thriving.

These are my clients and colleagues! I talk to folks like this every day. They don’t look all that exciting on social media, their podcasts aren’t in the top ten on Spotify, but they’re out there, doing well and happy about it all.

Boring can be awesome. If that's what you want, you have nothing to apologize for or feel imposter-y about. You can do good work and tell people about that work, and do just fine—without the rollercoaster ride.

Sarah
