Years ago, I wrote four years ago about my dog and how we can learn a lot about clear, precise communication from him.

Here's the link to read it, if you're so inclined.

Now, what's funny about that particular newsletter is that it's my most unsubscribed newsletter of all time. Hands down, no contest. People hated it.

Now, I did have four people (yes, I went and looked) reply and ask for more dog stories, but whew, I was struck by how many people were not here for that kind of newsletter.

Fast forward to now, and I'm collaborating with a professional on a project for my business and this person mentioned that newsletter. I can't remember quite what they said, but they mentioned that it was very me and that we should incorporate that vibe into this project.

Oh, and did I mention that not only am I this professional's client, but they've been my client?

For years, I'd filtered that email newsletter into the "my people hate this kind of thing" bucket, whereas in reality, not only did someone who'd literally been my client remember it, those four replies? Yep, you guessed it: they've all been clients or buyers of my courses.

The lesson here? (Aside from that my dog is stinking cute, of course.) Maybe the people who don't like what you have to say shouldn't have been in your orbit anyway. It's okay if folks realize they took a wrong turn and ended up somewhere that's not simpatico. Negative responses are no more valid than positive ones, so don't let that hold you back from writing a newsletter about your dog. (Okay, or cat, or fish, or bird, or pet rock—I'm here for it all!)

Onward & upward,

Sarah
