The antidote to starting from scratch each Monday

Hello Reader,

BTW: This edition of the newsletter is sponsored by Morning Brew, a newsletter I actually subscribe to. If you'd like to support the newsletter, and the rest of my free content, checking out the ad insertion is a great way to do so!

Something funny happens whenever I get on Zoom with a client.

Whether we’re in a one-off strategy session or a 6-week strategy sprint, my whiteboard almost instantly fills up with scribbled shapes: intersecting Venn diagrams, progression pyramids, four-square grids, and hasty bullseyes.

For a long time, I wondered why so many brilliant experts—consultants, strategists, designers, and creatives—crave this exact exercise.

The answer is actually simple: They're tired of starting from scratch.

Every week looks identical to many high achievers. Monday morning hits, they stare at a blank Google Doc, and ask, “What on earth should I write about today?” When a high-ticket prospect reaches out, they spend hours drafting custom proposals from the ground up. When a podcast guest opportunity pops up, they scramble to figure out their angle.

Their core brilliance lives strictly in their head as a collection of ad-hoc tactics rather than codified intellectual property.

In short: They don’t have a single source of truth for their business.

Codifying your methodology changes everything. When you document your thinking and turn it into a clear framework, system, or visual model, something magic happens. You stop selling generic deliverable hours or packages and start owning true intellectual property.

Your framework becomes your magic power—a strategic anchor that clients can only get from you:

  1. It creates an uncopyable competitive moat: Anyone can copy a service list, mirror deliverables, or undercut prices. But no one can duplicate your signature methodology. Owning your framework eliminates apples-to-oranges price comparisons and immediately elevates your authority.
  2. It turns your content into an easy grab bag: You never have to search for content ideas. You just look at your model—whether it's a pyramid, a list, Venn diagram, or a bullseye—pick one element, and zoom in. Your marketing becomes and exercise in, “What do I want to reach for today?”
  3. It makes referrals effortless: People can’t easily explain “a great coach or consultant.” But they can easily pitch a clear, structured methodology. When your model is visible, your network knows exactly why you're the right match.
  4. It gives your clients a map: As one of my past clients, coach Sasha Patpatia put it, “Frameworks, to me, they're like maps that you read. A really successful framework is really broad and really encompasses anywhere that you might be at. Frameworks are really great ways to focus people and keep a team together.”

Codifying your methodology isn't an academic exercise—it changes how you show up in your work every day across very different industries:

  • For artist and coach Sasha: Instead of getting stuck in formulaic, generic marketing tactics that didn't feel personal, Sasha codified her work into her signature Artist Homecoming Methodology. Having this custom framework gave her coachees a clear map of their creative journey, elevated her offer clarity, and gave her the freedom to build a thriving business without sacrificing her own creative practice.
  • For web designer Nic: Developing a clear, structured framework allowed her to articulate her unique value effortlessly. It made referrals seamless and helped her fall back in love with her work.
  • For corporate consultant Sara: Traditional marketers told Sara to “broaden her message” to appeal to more clients. Instead, we zeroed in on her proprietary frameworks. By creating a shared, structured language, she gave her niche audience a reason to seek her out specifically—fueling an authentic content system that never feels like “yucky” marketing.

When you do the work to document your thinking, you aren't just drawing diagrams on a whiteboard. You're building a lasting business asset—a single source of truth that pays compound interest for years to come.
